No Revis = No D

For the first time in his short career as Jets head coach, Rex Ryan acknowledged the offense.  Rex, who acts more like the defensive coordinator than head coach, was forced to do this because it was the offense which carried the team to a victory over the Dolphins on Sunday night.  The special teams should also be included, blocking a punt and having several nice kick off returns, as a big part of the victory.

Highlights from the game:

The so-called great Rex Ryan defense looked amateur.  They looked like they were playing a game of two hand touch.  The Dolphins threw the ball all over the field with ease.  Jets defenders were not within 10 yards of the receivers.  Their pass rush was non-existent.  The Jets defense made Chad Henne look like Dan Marino.  I was actually happy when the Dolphins went to the Wild Cat offense.  It was the only time they could stop them.  I thought Miami went to it way too much, and should have allowed Henne to continue carving up the Jets d.

Some might want to give the defense credit for stopping Miami on the final drive of the game in the end zone, but I won't.  I will call them lucky.  Being the type of person I am (negative), I will focus on the negative and how they allowed Miami to drive the ball down the field in less than a minute on three plays.  This was not something a defense considered to be the best in the league would ever allow.  The defense gave Jets fans an ulcer watching that final drive.  There probably was not one person who thought they would stop them.  They did nothing the entire game to prove they could stop the Dolphin passing attack.  If Henne made a better pass on the 4th down play, it would have been a touchdown with Miami going for two to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The game proved how much the Jets were bullshitting everyone over the summer when stating they were still a great defense without Darelle Revis.  They were without him for one game and looked lost.  There were Dolphin receivers wide open all over the place.  Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson can not cover a dead body.  I would like someone to explain to me why they are never looking at the ball when it is thrown at them.  It looks like they have no clue where it is.  Isn't this something they teach in practice?  I guess the Jets practice only consists of guys ordering cheese burgers and eating them on the field.

They desperately need Revis back.  The defense is not the same without him.  They play Buffalo next week and should be able to manage without him for one more week, but after that the schedule becomes much more difficult.  Revis is their defense.  Hopefully his injury is short term and they get him back on the field soon.  If not, the offense must continue to step up, and the head coach must change his philosophy.  He needs to understand his defenses weaknesses and not allow his huge ego to get in the way.  Rex's biggest flaw as head coach is his overconfidence in the defense.  This hurt the jets numerous times last season.  Hopefully Rex has grown as a coach and establishes more confidence in the offense, allowing Sanchez to lead the team.  Each game he plays, Sanchez continues to prove he is ready to take that next big step as a franchise quarterback.
